Matthew Ritchie Conserved: Conservation Talk with Rika Smith

Join List Visual Arts Center and Rika Smith, Conservator of Public Art, in a discussion about conserving Matthew Ritchie’s Games of Chance and Skill (2002) at the Zesiger Center!
This three-part indoor public art installation has unusually combined materials (220 glass tiles, a sensitive photo emulsion surface, and colorant dyes) and presents ongoing preservation challenges due to its materials, location, and facilities use. Get a behind-the-scenes perspective on conserving this unique artwork through close looking, materials study, and discussion of cross-disciplinary teamwork.
Rika Smith is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and has a master’s degree in conservation from the Winterthur/University of Delaware Art Conservation Program. She has a certificate in conservation from the Harvard University Art Museums and is a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. Her published research includes the preservation of modern and contemporary outdoor sculpture. She has worked on numerous public artworks at MIT.
