Gallery Discussion with Farah Al Qasimi

Join artist Farah Al Qasimi and  Ilisa Barbash, Museum Curator of Visual Anthropology at Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University, for a gallery talk on the exhibition List Projects: Farah Al Qasimi. In conversation, they will offer insights on Al Qasimi’s compositional strategies, use of camouflage as they relate to gender and national identities, and analyze what is fictionalized and what is authentic in the photographic imagery. 

About the Speakers

Farah Al Qasimi works in photography, video, and performance. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai; the San Francisco Arts Commission, San Francisco; the CCS Bard Galleries at the Hessel Museum of Art, New York; Helena Anrather, New York; and The Third Line, Dubai. Al Qasimi received her MFA from the Yale School of Art. She has participated in residencies at the Delfina Foundation, London; the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine; and is a recipient of the New York NADA Artadia Prize and the Aaron Siskind Individual Photographer’s Fellowship.

Ilisa Barbash, a New York City native, is curator of visual anthropology at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University and co-director of Sweetgrass (2009). She received a bachelor’s degree in French from Middlebury College in Vermont and a master’s degree in visual anthropology from the University of Southern California.
