Giving Voice: A Poster Project

The List Visual Arts Center invites MIT community members to participate in Giving Voice: A Poster Project. This project challenges participants to consider how we communicate and “give voice” to people, places and things that are too often silenced. With just a marker in hand, participants are encouraged to use text and visuals to send a message. Create a poster that speaks for those without a voice, be it an underrepresented community, your favorite pet, or an inanimate object. Posters can be provocative, funny, unsettling, calming, or sublime. All approaches are welcome. 

This project is inspired by the work of French artist JR, who’s public art installations challenge perspectives and unite communities around the world. To learn more about JR and his work, join us for a screening of his film, Paper & Glue in the Bartos Theater on Thursday, January 20 at 6 PM.

To participate:

  1. Please fill out the google form to register and receive prints of your final project.

  2. Using standard size printer paper, design and create a poster with any and all materials. Paper and markers are all that is needed, but additional materials are welcome and creativity is encouraged.

  3. Incorporate existing images and icons to communicate your message.

  4. Submit your poster via email to eponce1 [at] mit.edu (eponce1[at]mit[dot]edu) by Friday, January 21, 2022. (Additional details on how and what to submit will be shared after registering.)

  5. Participant posters will be tacked to bulletin boards in the atrium of the List Visual Arts Center, Bldg E15 from January 27 - February 4, 2022. 

  6. Visit the List Center to see your poster on display and retrieve 10 additional copies that will be printed for you to put out into the world.

  7. Limited to the first 50 participants.

This program is part of the Independent Activities Period (IAP), a special four-week term at MIT that runs from the first week of January until the end of the month.
