Andy Warhol Foundation: Philanthropy Factory

The MIT List Visual Arts Center is pleased to participate in Philanthropy Factory, a new initiative organized by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts that provides an opportunity for recent grantees to benefit from the sale of Warhol works from the Foundation’s collection. 

A selection of Warhol works are now available for immediate purchase on a first-come, first-serve basis for a limited time on the Foundation’s eBay for Charity platform. Proceeds from the sale of designated works will directly go to the List Center. With this carefully chosen selection of Polaroids, black and white photographs, prints, printed materials, and vintage posters, Philanthropy Factory celebrates Warhol’s philanthropy legacy and the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to arts organizations that bolster artists and nourish creativity. Available Artworks

Before becoming an internationally famous artist and cultural icon, Andy Warhol was a highly successful commercial illustrator for a variety of clients including Columbia Records, Glamour magazine, Harper's Bazaar, NBC, Tiffany & Co., and Vogue among others. As an illustrator for shoe designer I. Miller, Warhol produced advertisements which appeared weekly in the New York Times. Shoes would become a recurring subject for Warhol throughout his career. This charming lithograph for the cover of "A la Recherche du Shoe Perdu," the title a reference to Marcel Proust's "Remembrance of Things Past," offers a rare glimpse into Warhol's early iterations on this theme.

This is a rare, large scale original poster from the joint Leroy Neiman Andy Warhol exhibition at the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art in 1981 and features Warhol's portrait of Muhammad Ali. Warhol first photographed Ali as part of his "Athletes" series which presented portraits of sports greats of the 1970s. In this image of Ali, the legendary boxer's gazed is fixed on the viewer, moments away from throwing his first punch while color swirls around him, capturing the building energy and excitement of the coming fight. This is a unique opportunity to purchase a vintage poster directly from Warhol's own personal collection.

This lithographic gallery announcement by Andy Warhol from 1957 comes directly from the artist's estate. Before becoming an internationally famous artist and cultural icon, Andy Warhol was a highly successful commercial illustrator, utilizing whimsical techniques in his drawings. This announcement for a December exhibition of Warhol's "Gold Pictures" at the Bodley Gallery in New York City features a fantastical Christmas tree, made up of various figures and shapes, ranging from mermaids to cats and shoes. This is a unique opportunity to purchase a work-on paper from Warhol's personal collection.

This original lithograph by Andy Warhol from c. 1957, comes from the artist's estate. Related to Warhol's personal project "A Gold Book," this delicate work depicts a hand holding a branch of flowers. The work is made even more unique by Warhol's inclusion of six fingers on the hand. This example of Warhol's whimsical drawing is emblematic of the style that made him one of the most sought-after commercial illustrators in New York City in the 1950s, before his rise to Pop Art fame. This is a unique opportunity to purchase a lithograph from Warhol's personal collection.

This original Polaroid by Andy Warhol of Easha McCleary from 1974 comes directly from the artist's estate. McCleary was one of fourteen women Warhol photographed for his series of paintings and prints entitled, "Ladies and Gentlemen." Commissioned by Italian art collector Luciano Anselmino, the "Ladies and Gentlemen" series is derived from Polaroids of models from the trans and drag community. Warhol's assistants recruited the women from various clubs throughout New York City, paying each of them for sitting for a photo session with Warhol. This is a unique opportunity to purchase a Polaroid directly from Warhol's own personal collection.

This large-scale, vintage, original exhibition poster from 1977 was produced in conjunction with the exhibition of Warhol's Torso paintings at Prigioni Vecchie in Venice. Warhol's Torsos were part of his return to still life, these examining the subject of classical nudes and celebrating the beauty of the male body. The exhibition unabashedly re-centered Warhol's own sexuality in his work. This is a rare and out-of-print opportunity to purchase a vintage poster directly from Warhol's personal collection.
