The MIT List Visual Arts Center in collaboration with the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is pleased to announce:
CONVERSATION featuring Gardner Museum artist in residence Zhang Peili, LVAC director Jane Farver, MIT PHD student Karin, Oen, and curator of contemporary art at the Gardner Museum Pieranna Cavalchini
Zhang Peili (b. 1957, China) lives and works in Hangzhou, where he is the Dean of the New Media Department at the Hangzhou China Academy of Fine Arts. Today he remains one of China’s foremost video artists and his work has been shown in galleries throughout the world. In the United Sates he has shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is represented by the Tilton Gallery in New York.
Known for his clean, incisive style, Zhang uses photography and video to shed light on the cultural norms and social values that shape attitudes of human behavior in societies everywhere. His work often challenges contemporary Chinese social constraints while playfully targeting traditional authoritative roles. Zhang primarily works in video, a medium he deftly uses to bridge the mental and physical, while subtly addressing the viewer.
