The MIT List Visual Arts Center is pleased to announce artist Sara VanDerBeek will be creating a new photographic commission for installation in MIT’s Maseeh Hall dormitory.

For her public talk at the List, VanDerBeek will speak about her MIT project and place it within the context of her larger practice.

VanDerBeek is interested in the multiple ways photography can function—as a record, an object, a form of communication—and how photographs are attuned to the central aspects of our existence through their impact on one’s sense of time, place, memory, and scale.

In fall of 2013 VanDerBeek will be at MIT to meet with Maseeh Hall dormitory residents and to photograph the school, campus, and surrounding cities.  She is interested in exploring places in America formative to its history and how understanding the present through the past influences our sense of self.
