Matthew Ritchie was born in London, England in 1964. After receiving a BFA from Camberwell School of Art, London, in 1988 he moved to the United States and attended Boston University. Ritchie's large-scale wall and floor installations and artist’s Internet books are all components of an ongoing project, to find visual metaphors for the creation of the universe and the history of time. His work follows a group of symbolic characters that play out their stories in a world of colors and forms that are governed by a set of rules constructed by the artist. Solo exhibitions of Ritchie's work have been held at the Dallas Museum of Art; the White Cube Gallery, London; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami; the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art; and the Galeria Camargo Vilaça, São Paolo, Brazil. He has participated in numerous group shows at various institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Indianapolis Museum of Art; and the Musée de Beaux Arts de Nantes, France. He has also realized web projects with the Walker Art Center, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and MIT, and has had a project published in Parkett Magazine. Matthew Ritchie currently lives and works in New York.
